Value List Release Saturday April 26, 2008

We took a wee hiatus from the tasting room due to overriding commitments.  If you checked , there were a few notes for last week’s release provided by our colleague – David Beauroy – a man with an extraordinary palate!  We are back at the tasting trough with smiles on our faces after tasting the offerings in the

California is the theme and what a wonderful wine growing region it is!  California is well-known for their elegant cabernet sauvignons, spicy, bold zinfandels and outstanding chardonnays.  Many of the wines on offer this week are pricey, but as usual, we have found some well-priced gems: 

SPARKLING WINES

057422 Black Wing Chardonnay/Pinot Noir Sparkling Wine (South Australia) $16.95

A nice starter scented of yeast and crisp green apple with fresh fruit flavours and a crispy finish.

WHITE WINES

708305 Francis Coppola Diamond Collection Gold Label Chardonnay 2006 (Monterey County) $19.95

This Chardonnay offers rich aromas of lush tropical fruit. Nicely balanced ripe fruit and s subtle hit of oak.

355784 Ironstone Vineyards Obsession Symphony 2006 (California) $14.95

This is a returning favourite, a cross between Muscat of Alexandria and Grenache Gris. Big on floral aromas, a soft and round mouth feel and just enough sweetness to pair with spicy Asian dishes.

Lemon and lime zest nose, carrying through to the palate tangy, fresh and a great citrus acidity. Pair with shell fish or grilled ocean fish.

Splurge a little this Cali chard won’t let you down showing flavours of tropical fruit, citrus some minerality and a lingering finish. Will reward 2-4 years of cellaring.

Aromas of ripe dark fruit, pepper and some tobacco dominate on the palate showing ripe red fruit and smooth tannins.

Big bold and jammy, need I say more!

058339 Kaiken Malbec 2006 (Mendoza) $14.95

A wallop of dark fruit and tobacco box, nicely balanced with a lengthy finish! This will go fast at this price.

606624 Ringbolt Cabernet Sauvignon 2006 (Margaret River, Western Australia) $19.95

Pungent nose that is characteristically Cab Sauv green pepper, herb, and red berries with flavours of ripe red berries, licorice and some pepper and soft tannins.

070805 Itynera Primitivo 2006 (Puglia) $14.95

This fresh fun and fruity Primitivo shows ripe red fruit aromas and flavours. Easy drinking and matched to casual fare, BBQ, pizza.

070797 Poggio Al Tufo Alicante 2006 (Tuscany) $19.95

This rare red grape type Alicante is big on ripe red fruit. Delish!

Good schtank loads of ripe dark fruit, spice, tobacco and a lingering oaky finish.

Rich, ripe dark fruit, some spice and gum gripping tannins.

Sourced from old vines this Zin is lusciously fragrant of ripe dark fruit and spice. Flavours of dense dark fruit, notes of spice, nice acidity and ripe tannins - full bodied and elegant.
