Wine from a very popular region is the feature this weekend – we're going to Argentina – a formidable wine producer on the global stage. Wines from Argentina tend to be big and bold – to be drunk with beef – cattle ranching being another predominate industry of the region. Argentina produces Malbec – a wine that has gained a huge following over the past several years. Vintages is bringing us more than the ubiquitous Malbec this time – check out our picks below:
WHITE WINES
591743 Bodega Lurton Reserva Chardonnay 2008 (Argentina - $14.95)
From the Lurton brothers this Chard packs a punch of mouth filling peach and tropical fruit and smoky oak flavours. Pair with chicken dishes.
55475 J & F Lurton Flor De Torrontés 2007 (Argentina - $13.95)
Hail the brothers Lurton, yet another beauty – Torrontés the little white hero of Argentina offering up floral aromas, refreshing acidity and peach pit flavours. Serve as an aperitif, or just sip!
86249 Bonterra Sauvignon Blanc 2007 Organic (California - $17.95)
Gooseberries abound, citrus notes and fresh lemony acidity refreshingly nice as a sipper or paired with light dishes.
990580 Fairhall Downs Single Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc 2008 (New Zealand - $19.95)
Featuring characteristic aromas and flavours of fresh mown grass, guava some green pea notes, citrus and juicy acidity.
RED WINES
93930 St. Lucas Malbec 2007 (Argentina - $14.95)
This Malbec is quite fruit forward but not over the top offering up an array or dark berries and spice and a soft mouth feel. Excellent value!
107730 Luna Benegas Cabernet Sauvignon 2006 (Argentina - $14.95)
This one has a prominent eucalyptus nose and then follows through with typical cab flavours on the palate – blackberry & currants. This isn't oaked – so there is plenty of fruit here – but not a fruit bomb – supple & elegant!
93807 Chakana Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon (Argentina - $16.95)
All the flavours typical of a Cab. cassis, blackcurrant, pepper, tobacco, good tannins and balancing acidity.
68635 Burchino Chianti Superiore 2004 (Tuscany - $15.95)
A fresh blast of dark fruit, medium body – great value.
81125 Las Moras Black Label Shiraz 2005 (Argentina - $15.95)
Tons of plums, spicy oak character with some heat, this is a nice warmer.
41095 Liberty School Zinfandel 2006 (California - $17.95)
Liberty School rarely disappoints and this Zin delivers on dense black berries and spice. It's a mouth full, enjoy with steaks and sausages!
82453 Bodegas Victoria Pardina 2005 (Spain - $17.95)
Delicious at the beginning with a sumptuous length at the finish. Blackcurrant & Blackberry – it gets an 89 from Parker.
719575 Mount Langi Ghiran Billi Billi Creek Shiraz (Australia - $17.95)
A smooth fruit bomb – we know a bit of an oxymoron – but it's true. Green olives predominate on the nose and the palate brings chocolate & berries that – according to the note – will become sweeter with air. So it's best to decant this one.
943555 Château Suau Rouge 2005 (Bordeaux - $23.95)
From this stellar vintage this is excellent value just so harmonious, fruit and tannins replaying nicely on the palate.
91314 Château La Chandellière 2005 (Bordeaux - $26.95)
Absolutely delicious to drink right now or put down for a few years – not 10 – as the tannins are pretty tame right now. It's pricey – but damn fine!
