It was with great anticipation and excitement that made sure I woke up early for the Grand Opening of the Port Credit Farmers Market. I am a fan of farmers markets and have been to a number of them before but this one is special because it is close to my home in Port Credit.
Although it could be considered small by market standards (there will be more vendors added each week), it is perfect for Port Credit. First stop was the Mississauga Waterfront Festival tent and gather some information on the Festival coming next weekend, which is great fun with lots of things going on for kids, families and adults.
Today, the Port Credit BIA and Lions Club sponsored a free BBQ so my son Patrick and I started by enjoying a nice hot dog and drink. With our tummy’s full, we went to the Port Credit Farmers Market tent and picked up a T-shirt and Port Credit Farmers Market re-useable bag. The bag is a great size for not only the items we picked up here, but for shopping at many of the shops in Port Credit as well as our weekly shopping (women apparently love the bag because it's bright green and hard to lose - not that I get that). My kids did not want their face painted but many other kids did.
With bag in hand, first stop was La Villa Bakery for some fresh baked goods. Next vendor stop was DestinationCafe.Ca for my morning coffee fix. I have never had organic coffee before but I purchased his “Signature Blend” cup. This is a mix of Ethiopian, Sumatra Gayo Mountain, Peruvian Laflorida. It was really good so I purchased a bag to take home. They have a local shop, just down from the market, this coffee might replace my tin of other coffee in my kitchen.
While I enjoyed my coffee, we stopped and checked out cheeses at CheeseofCanada.ca. With a full selection of different cheeses, this is a must stop for the cheese lover in your family.
Continuing on our adventure, we had to stop and purchase some fresh strawberries for oldest son Jeffrey, Thames River Melon Co from Innerkip, Ontario has a huge selection of fresh strawberries as well as tomatoes, melon honey and other vegetables.
With our newly purchased strawberries, it was off to Blyleven Farms, to check out the flowers and their very fresh products. The Country Bee had a wide variety honey to suite all tastes. Final stop was J.O’s Fresh Produce from Welland, Ontario. They also had a wide selection of fresh fruits and vegetables.
We also enjoyed the music as well as the magician, juggler and big blow-up fat guy (which Patrick tried to knock over) they had walking around
Just after 10am, they had the opening ceremonies, with the BIA volunteers, city councillor for Port Credit as well as the local MPP. With the ribbon cutting complete, the first week of the Port Credit Farmers Market was open and ready for a whole summer of fresh fruits, vegetables, plants, baked good and over all atmosphere. Based on the number of people coming and going, and filling up their Port Credit Farmers Market bag, I can see this is going to be a huge hit.
