Vintages Release Notes for Saturday May 24, 2008

David Beauroy’s Tasting Notes – May 24th Vintages Release

$10-15 RANGE  WHITES

Mas des Bressades Cuvée Tradition Blanc 2007, France – AC Costière de Nîmes, +701094, $12.95, p. 32 A blend of classic Rhône grapes, Grenache Blanc, Roussanne and Viognier.  Clean, floral and peach layers on the nose, palate is soft and rich with juicy ripe peach dominating.  Can’t go wrong with this.

A Mano Fiano/Greco 2006, Italy – IGT Puglia, +60939, $14.95, p. 34 From Italy’s heel comes this delightful summery 50/50 blend of Fiano di Avellino and Greco di Tufo.  Dry with a spritzy texture, scents of orange blossom and candied fruit, super refreshing, great value.

$15-25 RANGE

WHITES

Sileni Cellar Selection Sauvignon Blanc 2007, New Zealand – Malborough, +662882, $15.95, p.17 Clean, green, crisp, white asparagus, cactus, grapefruit, and grassy notes. Medium body with good length. Made for spring and well –priced.

Penmara Reserve Chardonnay 2006, Australia – New South Wales, +912790, $16.95, p. 29 A few releases ago I was extolling the virtues of Penmara’s worthy Shiraz (+565929, still a good amount around).  This Chardonnay confirms that there are other good things going on there.  It’s pale gold with elegant, clean aromas of melon and citrus, a good dose of balancing acidity and great length.  Stock up and enjoy through the summer.

Forrest Estate Riesling 2007, New Zealand – Malborough, +60103, $18.95, p. 14 In a blind tasting I would have said it was German.  Clean, classic, benchmark style.  Full of apricot, citrus, and candied ginger.  Lightly off dry with a good grip on the palate. Fresh, lively, totally worth it.

Lammershoek Barrique Chenin Blanc 2007, South Africa – WO Swartland, +58206, $18.95, p. 30 Another stunner from this winery.  A brilliant Chenin Blanc with enticing aromas of baked apples, honey, smoke, vanilla and quince.  Intense flavours, complex structure, balanced acidity.  Superb value and positively delicious.

REDS

Ortas Tradition Rasteau 2006, France – AC Côtes du Rhône-Village, +998716, $15.95, 998716, p. 34 Super concentrated black fig and tobacco layers, very tasty with a solid core of 14% alcohol, clean finish.  A fine house wine.

Château de Flaugergues Cuvée Sommelière 2006, France – AC Coteaux du Languedoc, +65896, $17.95, p. 33 Blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries and some leathery tones. Great structure, good acidity and a substantial finish.  Good value.

Mas des Bressades Cuvée Excellence 2006, AC Costière de Nîmes, +708750, $17.95, p. 33 Very deep ruby and loaded with ripe berries.  Clean, dense, rustic, full flavoured value.  This wine has been consistently good and has a loyal following; if you want some don’t dither.

Baron de Ley Reserva 2002, Spain – DOCa Rioja, +958868, $19.95, p. 37 2002 is not considered a great vintage in Rioja, but you would not know it from tasting this example.  Pretty classic for the region with cherry, tobacco, vanilla and some whiffs of strawberry thrown in.  Dry, medium bodied, soft tannins, and very well made.  Very good value for the region.

Blackbilly GSM 2006, Australia – McLaren Vale, SA, +59840, $22.95, p. 29 A solid blend of 65% Grenache, 20% Shiraz, 15% Mourvèdre.  Nice combination of flavours and aromas with pronounced notes of strawberry, blackberry, licorice, dried herbs and spice.  On the palate nice taste of boysenberry, full body and yet enough grace to actually seem refreshing.  Serve lightly chilled and enjoy.

Shepherds Ridge Vineyard Pinot Noir 2006, New Zealand – Malborough, +586099, $24.95 p. 7 Intense spicy cherry cola and beetroot notes.  Dry, full, very tasty, very long length.

Domaine de Font-Sane Gigondas Tradition 2005, AC Rhône, +735779, $24.95, p. 33 72% Grenache, 25% Syrah, and a sprinkling of Mourvèdre and Cinsault.  Dry and full bodied with strawberry and raspberry aromas, some lavender notes in the background too.  Meaty with a spicy bite on the finish.  Needs a bit of time and will be superb in a few years.

$25+

Château Musar 1999, Lebanon –Bekaa Valley, +708552, $54.95, p. 37 “When he isn’t dodging bombs and bullets, Beirut winemaker Serge Hochar makes a pretty good wine – and he’s only missed a few vintages when battles in the Bekaa Valley got in the way of his harvest” Associated Press, Wines of War, 4/12/1989.  Almost 2 decades later, while Lebanon continues to be an extremely unstable place, the wine itself continues to be the stuff of legend, a cult wine that is much in demand around the world.  It’s an unusual blend of Cab. Sauvignon, Carignan and Cinsault.  Its aged bouquet of red fruit, plums, balsamic vinegar and spice is characteristic and incredibly alluring.  Dry and smooth-textured, with an “umami-like” taste.  Absolutely worth a try if you are a fan of aged Bordeaux.  It also has good ageing potential.

Sherry & Dessert Wine

Don Jose Maria Very Old Fino Sherry, Spain – DO Jerez, +70342, $19.95, p.25 Nice layers of dried apples and nuts.  Pretty intense flavour replays come through on its clean, smooth and silky texture.  Have it with tapas.

Domaine Cady Coteaux du Layon St. Aubin 2003, France – AC Loire, +65961, $25.95, p.32 Beautiful medium gold colour, pleasant botrytis-affected notes of almonds, marzipan, clementines, honey, and spring flowers.  Medium sweet with a velvety texture, nice acidity and an extremely long finish.  Serve it for dessert.

Justino’s Henriques 10-Year-Old Malvasia Madeira, +69575, $35.95, p.26 Superb, rich and complex with mince tart, dried fruit and prune layers.  Medium sweet with a classic tangy streak running through it.  Ready to drink with mature/runny/blue cheeses or save it for Christmas fruit cake or mince tart.

VVL Release Saturday May 10, 2008

Hello Everyone!

Well is at it again – showcasing pinot noir in this Saturday's release. This is hit & miss grape at the value-end of the spectrum. We tasted ~ 20 pinots from different regions around the world. Of course, we loved the $40 Burgundian – but not enough for it to merit mention on this list. Consequently there is nary a pinot to be seen on the list. If you are pinot fans – we recommend that you visit the nearest to get a recommendation from a Product Consultant.

SPARKLING WINES

616441 Henry of Pelham Cuvee Catharine Brut (VQA Ontario) $29.95

This is a fantastic sparkling wine rivalling those hailing from Champagne. Toast, apple and citrus highlight this very dry fizz. Grab a dozen oysters and a bottle and you are set!

Ontario Brewing Awards Winners

Yesterday afternoon, I had the opportunity to sit in on the 5th annual Ontario Brewing Awards and sample some of the Gold Medal winners.

Gold Medal Winners - Ontario Brewing Awards

57 brands of Ontario brews were submitted for judging across 15 different categories.  The big winners were walking away with 3 Golds, 3 Silvers and 1 People's Choice.  Close behind were and with 2 Golds, 2 Silvers and 2 People's Choice each.  The People's Choice favourite was with 3 People's Choice and 2 Silver Medals.

The awards, which caused some brew-ha-ha last year, were judged this year by a panel of beer experts and some regular beer drinking folks.  The Gold and Silver Medals were based on the expert tastings and the People's Choice were based on the whole panels input.

As soon as the photo above hit Flickr, comments started coming in on the winners:

  • Adam said "Hockley Stout? Gotta try that... the dark is already almost a stout."
  • Raj said the Belgian Wit is "Good for the patio"
  • Arieh added a note to Cameron's Auburn, "The Auburn is my favourite"

Which are you favourites? Any surprises on the list?

Keep reading for the full list of Gold, Silver and People's Choice Winners.

Value List Release Saturday April 26, 2008

We took a wee hiatus from the tasting room due to overriding commitments.  If you checked , there were a few notes for last week’s release provided by our colleague – David Beauroy – a man with an extraordinary palate!  We are back at the tasting trough with smiles on our faces after tasting the offerings in the

California is the theme and what a wonderful wine growing region it is!  California is well-known for their elegant cabernet sauvignons, spicy, bold zinfandels and outstanding chardonnays.  Many of the wines on offer this week are pricey, but as usual, we have found some well-priced gems:

SPARKLING WINES

057422 Black Wing Chardonnay/Pinot Noir Sparkling Wine (South Australia) $16.95

A nice starter scented of yeast and crisp green apple with fresh fruit flavours and a crispy finish.

WHITE WINES

708305 Francis Coppola Diamond Collection Gold Label Chardonnay 2006 (Monterey County) $19.95

Vintages Value List for Saturday April 12, 2008

The Vintages Value List went south this week. Rose & I were just too busy to make it to the tasting room. Rose is cramming for her wine final exam and I find myself working off site more and more... The theme of this week's release is "sun worship" - highlighting wines from warm climates. These wines tend to be relatively high in alcohol as the extra sun and warmth allows the grapes to reach a level of ripeness that sees higher than average brix. Brix is a measure of sugar content in the grape and it is the sugar that gets translated into alcohol during fermentation.

We have is on good authority that the following wines are recommended via our colleague - David Beauroy - ex-chef and wine expert. Here are his notes:

Penmara Reserve Shiraz 2004, Australia – New South Wales, +912782, $17.95, p. 29 Full of spicy black fruit, herbs, nice and complex. Dry with superb structure, and a tasty finish. Drinking very well now, ideal for this kind of unstable weather.

Domaine des Ormes Cuvée Azur 2005, France – AC Côtes du Roussillon, +65912, $17.95, p. 14 Look for a nice summery blue label. Lovely blend of Carignan (60%), Mourvèdre (30%), and Syrah (10%). Very deep/opaque ruby, intense layers of sun dried olives, violets and lavender. Dry, full and delicious.

St Hallett Cabernet Sauvignon 2006, Australia , +15164, $19.95, p. 10 Clean cassis and berry notes with mint and milk chocolate in the background. Nice soft texture, low-medium tannins and balancing acidity round its power (14.5 %) out.

Vintages Value List for Saturday March 29, 2008

Greetings All!

Vintages is promoting organic and artisanal wines this weekend. The emergence of organic wine, along with many other organic offerings in the consumer realm has grown exponentially over the past few years. We have tried to be good environmental citizens in the past and purchased a few of the organic wines brought in by over the years, but these have been met with disappointment for the most part. Given the high consumer demand for such products, producers have risen to the challenge of producing good quality wine without the use of pesticides, fertilizer, and high levels of sulphites. Wines with high levels of sulphites – a preservative – can cause headaches for the allergen sensitive. This release offers some VERY good and affordable organic wines. As well as organic offerings, "artisanal" wines are featured. These are defined as wines made using traditional methods, staying true to the land and the climate and with an extreme passion not witnessed in most commercial wineries.

WHITE WINES

001693 Grove Mill Pinot Gris 2007 (Marlborough, New Zealand) $16.95

Impressive Pinot Gris richly scented of flowers, apricot and lychee, nice body and a slightly oily mouth feel. (not certified organic, but carbon neutral)

Vintages Value List Saturday March 15, 2008

HELLO!

The Vintages release catalogue provides a bevy of wine factoids and beautiful photography for each release. This one is particularly delish because its focus is food-wine pairing. Here are the highlights of their counsel:

  • If you are planning to serve a wide variety of appetizers, you’ll want to choose a wine that is light enough to enjoy on its own and versatile enough to match with a variety of foods: wines with “zippy” acidity (Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Italian Pinot Grigio, Sparklers)
  • Match textures of the dishes to textures of the wine: tomato sauce = Chianti/sangiovese, olive oil = pinot grigio, cream sauce = chardonnay, pesto = Riesling
  • Seasoning – to elevate the flavours, match the unique character of the wine to the strongest seasoning element
  • Eat local – drink local
  • Strong flavours call for medium to full-bodied wines

Bon Appetit!

Vintages Value List for Saturday February 16, 2008

Greetings All!

Cabernet Sauvignon is being featured this weekend. VINTAGES touts Cab Sauv as the "king" of red wine grapes and they are right on the money there. Cabernet Sauvignon takes on very different characteristics depending on where the grapes are grown. The typical Cab Sauv will feature berry fruits like blackcurrants and cassis, good structure and full-bodied flavour. It is a classic red wine and this week's offerings do not disappoint.

Here is this week's line-up:

Vintages Value List for Saturday February 2, 2008

Greetings All!

Vintages has put together a fantastic release for this Saturday. Oh yeah – there is the usual Valentine’s bumpf – the most intriguing of this push is a Chocolate Dessert Wine – described as a “candy bar in a bottle”. We didn’t try it.

The theme of this weekend’s release is “90+” – where wines scoring higher than “90” are featured – and yes, some of them even qualify for the Vintages Value List (<$25)! If you can – log onto or pick up the release catalogue when you head to the store - Vintages has put together a great piece describing the and how to use it.

Vintages Value List for Saturday Jan. 5, 2008

A very HAPPY NEW YEAR to each and every one of you!

We hope your holidays were filled with plenty of good cheer, good food and good wine! Our apologies for not offering tips from the last release – but this new release offers much more at our target price point. The folks at Vintages know that our pocketbooks are feeling the strain of holiday buying and have most of the wines on offer this Saturday coming in below $25. There was so much to taste that we had to break up the tasting into two sessions. AND, not only has Vintages dropped their prices, we also get a wee bonus from the GST decrease effective Jan 1. All round – this is a great way to start 2008!

RED WINE

57877 Hahn Estates Cabernet Sauvignon 2005 (Central Coast, California) $15.95

We loved this most interesting wine. It is definitely a Cali Cab (i.e. fruit forward), but offers an interesting nose and palate. The nose features pepper, hints of green olive. The palate is bold with raspberry and blackberry notes with an underlying sweet nutmeg savouriness that we found irresistible. We didn’t spit this one out and the price is bang on!

Vintages Value List for Saturday Nov. 24, 2007

Rose & I whipped through the tasting room this time round – there were many wines on offer that don’t meet the Vintages Value criteria - wine under $25. Our trip to the tasting room wasn’t a total bust. We learned some interesting wine trivia: Did you know that Richard Nixon drank Chateau Margaux (~ $1000/bottle) at White House functions, while his guests drank Californian plonk? The waiter would cover the bottles with linen to hide the label of wine poured for Dick – just verifies our previous inklings – “You just can’t trust politicians!” Nixon would have liked this release – no Margaux – but plenty of premium wines on offer. We managed to find a couple of gems that won’t hurt the pocketbook too much:

Vintages Value List for Saturday November 10, 2007

Salut!

A few bottles from the 2005 Burgundy vintage will be hitting the shelves this Saturday.

This vintage is touted as being one of the best of the century – a perfect vintage. Why? Early spring rains brought plenty of water and water reserves to get the vines going and keep them growing throughout the early summer. The summer was warm and dry with cool temperatures in the evening – creating the optimal acidity levels in the grapes. There was a brief wet spell right before the harvest which gave the grapes a wee boost and then a tepid harvest season ensured that the grapes could be picked leisurely at their optimal brix. The end result provides mature tannins, the pips lose their bitterness and the grape skins are delicate.

Burgundy produces some of the finest wines in the world. Centuries of grape growing and wine production have rarely failed to thrill collectors and imbibers alike. The prices are quite high due to demand and the small production lots, but “Burghounds” shell out for the wine that, for some, is close to nirvana.
